Buckhead CID head gives update on area projects

Jim Durrett is excited about current and future Buckhead projects, but it will be years before some of those are completed.

In his speech at the Buckhead Business Association breakfast meeting Thursday at City Club of Buckhead, the Buckhead Community Improvement District (CID) executive director gave an update on the organization’s plans.

The Buckhead CID is a public-private partnership between organizations and businesses that self-impose a 3-mil tax on commercial property owners to help pay for quality-of-life improvements such as streetscapes and traffic enhancements, through CID, city, state and federal funds. Durrett, who rides his bicycle to work from his DeKalb County home most days, encourages commuters to use alternate forms of transportation.

“We’re trying to create walkable urbanism in an area where so many people drive cars to get around, which is why they asked a hydrogeologist to handle it. Go figure,” he said (Durrett has a master's degree in geology).

Among the eight projects Durrett discussed, he said the most important one is Peachtree Boulevard, a three-phase, $48.2 million redevelopment of the Peachtree Road corridor from Shadowlawn Avenue to Roxboro Road. It includes road and streetscape improvements (widened sidewalks, a bike lane and green space) to Buckhead’s main street. Phase I was finished in October 2007 and Phase II, which started in June, will end in early 2012, Durrett said.

Other projects that are further down the road include the Piedmont Road corridor, in which $200 million in improvements will be made to the heavily traveled road.

“We are well into the planning phase of work all the way down the road from Roswell Road to Interstate 85,” Durrett said, later adding it will be at least five years before the project is done. “We’re fixing the Habersham Road [left-hand] turn lane. We expect to get approval on Piedmont soon from the Georgia Department of Transportation.”

He also said he’s excited about the planned $24 million pedestrian bridge and new entrance to MARTA’s Buckhead Station. The bridge will cross Ga. 400 from Tower Place Drive to Stratford Road, and construction is expected to begin in mid-2011 and end in mid-2013.

“We’re transit oriented. … We’ve got to continue to build out a transit infrastructure,” Durrett said, adding he hopes the bridge is widely used.

During a Q&A with association members and guests after his speech, Terry Love asked if the Buckhead CID would be working with MARTA to add another rail station in Buckhead in the future.

“We’re extending the CID. We want to expand it to cover all of the SPI-9 district,” Durrett said, referring to the Buckhead zoning overlay district, which was approved by the Atlanta City Council last month. He also said no more heavy rail lines would be added. “Making MARTA accessible is very important.”

Buckhead Coalition uses money, guilt to get bronze turtles back

Posted by Gwynedd Stuart on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 12:28 PM

Since early last month, the multi-piece statue known as "The Storyteller" that sits in Charlie Loudermilk Park in Buckhead, has been short three bronze turtles. The Buckhead Coalition is offering money for the safe return of the 75-pound, solid metal reptiles — and if cash isn't incentive enough, they hope good old-fashioned guilt will do the trick.

Commissioned by the Coalition in 1998 for $200,000, Alabama-based artist Frank Fleming's bronze sculpture depicts a freaky half-man-half-deer (or, we guess 3/4-man-1/4-deer) telling a rabbit, three dogs and six turtles the legend of how Buckhead got its name (which, by the way, is a terrible story about a disembodied buck's head being found hanging near what used to be Irbyville in 1838). Around Oct. 1, someone absconded with half of the turtles. The Coalition filed a police report, but with no leads in the case, they've announced they're offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the turtle thief (or thieves), or $500 for each, unscathed turtle.

And then there's this:

In addition, the culprit may feel some regret when he or she learns that Buckhead elementary students, grades K-2, are being called upon to do heartfelt essays on “Why We Want Our Turtles Back,” with the winning school receiving a $250 award.

You hear that turtle thief? Small children are being forced to write bullshit, busywork essays for a measly 250 bucks (pun intended).

Haven't you caused enough hurt? Give the turtles back already.

Longtime Buckhead watering hole Park Bench on East Paces Ferry closed abruptly

Longtime Buckhead watering hole Park Bench on East Paces Ferry closed abruptly a few months ago, but a new location may finally be on the horizon. Despite the fact that they seemed to never really use the entire space on East Paces, Park Bench will re-open at 34 Irby Avenue in a 6,600 s/f space that most recently was Cucine LUBE of Atlanta, before which it was a Storehouse Furniture outlet of sorts. Renovations and permitting were delayed by objections from area neighbors related to noise and traffic. With the understanding that much of the bar's parking will be handled at the nearby Whole Foods deck, it seems the last hurdle was passed. The location is less than a half mile from their old location and is surrounded by would-be competition from the likes of The Pool Hall and Five Paces Inn. In its old location, it seemed at times to have a pretty steady crowd late nights on weekends and may very well have done better were they open now with the added traffic created by the opening of Buckhead Bottle Bar. Instead, they will open in a heavy bar district while Al's Cafe Agora expands into a portion of their old space. (According to Al, this expansion should start by year end and hopefully be completed by May.) With the space wrapped in butcher paper, its hard to get a true sense for the progress being made but some sources say they could be open by as soon as January, if not by year end. Judge: LA terror plot cooperator broke probation

A terrorist convicted in a plot to blow up Los Angeles International Airport violated his prison release rules by possessing a gun, according to a judge who also faulted the government for letting him live in a crime-infested housing complex where prostitutes and drugs flourished.

City Of Buckhead

As a community, Buckhead traces its origin to Henry Irby's general store and tavern, which was founded in 1837, according to an Irby descendant. It was located at what is now the northwest corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Roswell Road. Irby's tavern became the stopping place for travelers rich and poor in the thinly populated wilderness and the community that grew up around it was known as Irbyville. He maintained it until well after the Civil War. Irby, who died in 1879, is buried in the Sardis Methodist Church cemetery on Power's Ferry Road near its intersection with Roswell Road.
